Pixel!SCAN

THE Scanning Solution for UNIX

Pixel!SCAN provides an icon-based interface for advanced, multi-threaded scanning capabilities with simple point-and-click functionality. Pixel!SCAN goes beyond typical scanning solutions by offering features that will help you produce quality scans with little effort: scan color calibration as well as extensive automatic and interactive color adjustment controls. With the one-step scan color calibration process, you can generate a correction for your scanner with the supplied Mentalix calibration target. For true plug-and-play with the scanner you are using, Pixel!SCAN's "image intelligence" automatically provides preset scan settings that can be tailored by the user.

Pixel!SCAN allows you to perform gang scans, thereby reducing repetitive tasks. You can also scan images directly to a file and apply convolution filters like unsharp mask and descreen while scanning. All these features exist in a single tool that produces a final scan that rivals the quality of the original.

This member of the Pixel!FX Deluxe family of integrated imaging products has application in a wide variety of markets: Desktop Publishing; Document Imaging; Fingerprint Identification; GIS; Scientific & Technical Applications; Office Automation; Web Page Authoring; Manufacturing; Medical; Educational; and Federal, State & Local Government. It has been designed to operate efficiently on all popular UNIX platforms. Displays supported include most monochrome, grayscale, 8-bit or 24-bit color display controllers.

It offers an icon-based user interface that includes complete point-and-click functionality. The use of tear-off menus and icon toolbars allows you to customize your display. Extensive drag and drop support gives you intuitive control of powerful image manipulation operations.

It also provides unprecedented speed and performance in the most demanding image processing environments. The result is increased user productivity with less time spent waiting for display refreshes and file saves.

Feature Summary

  • Supports SCSI scanners from Agfa, Bell+Howell, Epson, Fujitsu, HP, Howtek, Microtek, Sharp, and UMAX (see Scanners/Platforms for a complete list)
  • Multi-threaded scanning improves performance and reduces image quality problems due to scanner backtracking
  • True 30-bit+ RGB color scanning support available on certain scanner models
  • Pre-emptable prescan with incremental preview of scan
  • Automatic partial prescan -- constrained to selected scan bed viewing area
  • Color calibration -- Automated calibration process using a Mentalix-supplied calibration target or a choice of supported standard calibration targets (e.g., IT8 target)
  • Automatic adjustment allows program to determine appropriate look-up table (LUT) and/or scan settings for a particular image
  • Initial scan settings easily customized
  • Resizable crop box allows interactive cropping prior to scanning
  • Prescan performs a low-resolution pass of scanner bed and displays a color representation of the image on the scan window as the image is prescanned
  • Interactively manipulate prescan display to adjust size and select areas for final scan
  • Scan directly to: file, Pixel!VIEW, Pixel!EDIT, Pixel!PRINT, network destination or third-party fax application
  • True network scanning allows you to scan across your network or Intranet
  • Automated transmission of scanned images through corporate networks and/or the Internet
  • Scan directly to 256-color image to reduce time and storage overhead when working with spot color materials
  • Scan to File allows scanning of images larger than available swap space
  • Scan Gang Add feature allows multiple areas of the image to be selected for inclusion in a single batch scan
  • Scan Gang button executes a final scan of multiple areas and loads each area into its own image window to save or edit
  • Editable scan list can be used to modify gang scan or switch between frequently used scanned choices
  • Reset Scan Window button clears and resets the scan window after performing a scan or prescan
  • Zoom In/Zoom Out to view prescan image; scroll bars facilitate moving around in the image
  • Size and output control features allow interactive adjustments to resolution, size and output parameters
  • Automatically set scanning settings to match user-specified output size and line screen
  • Histogram shows distribution of scan intensities over prescan area
  • Adjust scanner color settings interactively using graphic display to obtain optimum results
  • Configurable scan parameters include:
    • Resolution -- Full resolution of scanner
    • Image Type -- Supports line art, up to 16-bit grayscale, 48-bit RGB color and 64-bit CMYK images
    • White Point, Mid Point, and Black Point -- Use in conjunction with histogram to stretch range of output values
    • Brightness -- Controls darkness/lightness of image
    • Contrast -- Softens or sharpens image
    • Gamma -- Corrects for color mismatch of hardware devices
    • Color Adjustment -- Can adjust RGB composite or each channel separately
    • Paper Size -- Up to 11 x 17 inches
    • Look-Up Tables -- Including custom LUTs
    • Area -- Region of interest selection
  • Projects image size prior to scan
  • Supports scanner-specific options -- Dither, invert, mirror, pixel averaging, and density
  • Support for applying convolution filters, including Unsharp mask, Descreen or user-defined filters, while scanning
  • Scan and Prescan grids -- Supports inches, centimeters, pica, and point measures
  • Automated document feeder support for selected scanners
  • Transparency adapter support for selected scanners
  • Close and Release feature disconnects the scanner so that it can be used by another user
  • Save and reload most scan setting combinations for repetitive tasks
  • Scan with independent x/y resolution when supported by scanner
