Europay Customizes Pixel!ENGINE For SuperCom
Banking Network
As
the leading financial services provider in Europe,
Europay International provides personal payment services
to the European banking community. Headquartered in
Waterloo, Belgium, Europay International also offers
payment products to banks worldwide through its alliance
with MasterCard International. One of the premier
services that the company presents to its member banks
is SuperCom -- an electronic imaging system and network
which transmits credit card transaction-related documents
electronically between banks.
SuperCom -- comprised of Hewlett-Packard (HP) UNIX
workstations, HP ScanJet scanners and Fujitsu 3093
scanners -- automates the process of resolving credit
card transaction inquiries. Chargeback documentation
and receipts are scanned and transmitted through the
SuperCom network. Member banks can use SuperCom workstations
in their offices or utilize "hub sites", where Europay
receives and transmits images on their behalf.
Leon Dhaene, Senior Manager of Business Services at
Europay International, says that the company created
the SuperCom system to answer member banks' needs
for "rationalizing the process of dealing with paper
documents." He continues: "We saw that we could provide
services that would contribute to increasing the profitability
of our member banks by automating that process."
According to Dhaene, SuperCom helps banks to save significant
amounts of both time and money by eliminating postage
and reducing processing costs. In addition, SuperCom
can reproduce and send high-resolution images within
24 hours. This increased speed and reliability means
that settlements are reached more quickly than with
the old procedures, leading to a greater degree of
customer satisfaction.
When Europay created SuperCom, they combined several
applications, most of which focused on database management.
For the scanning engine -- a vital piece of the imaging
system -- the developers required smooth integration
with the other applications. Dhaene notes that another
key element was compatibility with the operating system
and scanners being used. Additionally, the software
had to support SuperCom's Graphical User Interface
(GUI), which features customized language familiar
to users in the banking industry. After comparing
several applications, Europay chose Mentalix's Pixel!ENGINE
because it met all of these requirements. Dhaene adds
that another incentive was his discovery that the
Pixel!FX
imaging suite is the "de facto standard in the
marketplace."
"The performance had to be good," Dhaene continues.
"[SuperCom] is a customized solution, with all the
applications supporting the GUI. A powerful scanning
engine makes this possible."
Pixel!ENGINE provides a TCL-based scripting
interface which enables batch or command-line interactive
scanning, file conversion, and Optical Character Recognition
functionality. Systems integrators can use Pixel!ENGINE
as an Application Programming Interface (API) to integrate
with third-party products or customized programs.
Pixel!ENGINE allows administrators to choose
the imaging features needed. As a result, end-users
can execute frequently-used imaging commands simply
by clicking an icon.
When Europay's developers fine-tuned Pixel!ENGINE
for SuperCom, their chief concerns were legibility
and speed. The development team tailored Pixel!ENGINE
to specifically fulfill those needs. Dhaene also notes
that unlike many applications, Pixel!ENGINE
presented none of the difficulties that systems integrators
often encounter when attempting to merge American-made
software with a European-based system.
Upon SuperCom's release in 1996, it was installed in
four of Europay's member banks. Shortly thereafter
SuperCom's popularity increased rapidly; today, over
46 systems are in use in 15 countries, and about 200
smaller banks employ the hub site in Waterloo.
Many companies utilize Mentalix's Pixel!FX to
meet their need for an off-the-shelf imaging solution.
However, as Europay International demonstrates, businesses
can also benefit from the customizable, flexible options
offered in applications such as Pixel!ENGINE.
