Pixel!FX Helps Florida Police Keep The City
Of Largo Safe
Frequently,
effective crime prevention boils down to one crucial
factor: good timing. When the members of the police
department in Largo, Florida, decided to create a
domestic violence prevention program, one of their
goals was to implement a quick, reliable method for
collecting and transferring evidence records to the
District Attorney. Last year, the City of Largo received
a federal grant to set up a victim assistance program,
and this revolutionary effort has proven to be successful
in assisting with the rapid prosecution of domestic
violence perpetrators.
Because of the nature of domestic violence cases, the
collected evidence must often be assembled on short
notice. "Time is critical," Mike Pearlman, systems
administrator, said. "We must get the evidence to
the District Attorney before the trial. Often, when
someone is charged with domestic violence, they may
be picked up and jailed overnight, and then taken
to court the next morning. If the D.A. doesn't have
all of the correct evidence there in time, the suspects
may be released the next morning.
"With this system, we can get it there every morning.
We input the data into our system and transfer it
electronically, instead of collecting it and then
driving it over."
The City of Largo's police department utilizes a Hewlett-Packard
HP-UX system, with an HP ScanJet 5p scanner. After
evaluating other products, they selected Mentalix
Inc.'s Pixel!FX
imaging software suite because it met their specific
needs. "We were looking for a solution in which we
could convert the evidence into computer form and
use Web forms and Web pages to transfer the information
to the D.A.," Pearlman stated. "We chose Pixel!FX
because we needed a really robust program for UNIX.
Pixel!FX offered the most options as far as
output settings, and it had the best user interface."
"Also," he continued, "since we wanted to use a Web
format, we needed more than just the TIFF file formats,
which is what most scanning programs offer. We needed
the GIF and JPEG capabilities that Mentalix's
software has."
The Pixel!FX suite includes three imaging applications:
Pixel!SCAN,
Pixel!EDIT
and Pixel!VIEW.
The domestic violence prevention team primarily uses
Pixel!SCAN to scan in case-related evidence,
such as crime scene reports, witness statements and
photographs. Occasionally, they also employ Pixel!EDIT's
image processing tools, and they utilize Pixel!VIEW
to save the images in the required file formats. They
then transfer the information to the District Attorney's
office via an Intranet-like solution.
According to Pearlman, Largo's police department is
also discussing an expansion of the program's computerized
evidence recording capabilities, including migrating
to a different operating system which handles video
capabilities. Fortunately, Pixel!FX's versatility
allows for such transitions, so the law enforcement
office can add to or change its imaging system without
the hassle of replacing its current scanning software.
Since Pixel!FX supports the most popular UNIX
operating systems, it can easily accommodate a platform
change.
With its supportive role in the City of Largo's Community
Oriented Policing efforts, the domestic violence prevention
team applies the latest in imaging technology to help
prevent the recurrence of these often tragic crimes.
Such innovation helps the City of Largo maintain its
standing as one of the safest communities in Florida.
