Mentalix Launches Version 5.1 of Pixel!FX®
Release features OCR enhancements and Linux support
PLANO, Texas -- Mentalix Inc., an established provider
of imaging and scanning solutions for UNIX systems,
announces the availability of Pixel!FX®
Version 5.1. Particularly of interest for users who
need document imaging functionality are significant
feature enhancements in the
Pixel!OCR® application, including
Rich Text Format output and barcode recognition. Additionally,
the entire Pixel!FX Version 5.1 suite of products
is now available for Linux users.
Pixel!OCR 5.1 builds on the capabilities of previous versions
with its leading-edge, multiple OCR engine technology. Essentially,
the application includes several recognition engines, and each specializes
in interpreting a particular image quality level or type. For example,
one engine excels in character repair for reading low-quality text
or newsprint, while another engine references an index of known
character patterns to decipher damaged text, such as a faxed document.
Therefore, every time a user performs OCR on a document, Pixel!OCR
maximizes its effectiveness by combining multiple recognition strategies
based on the quality of the scanned image.
In addition to advancing the technology behind Pixel!OCR,
Mentalix engineers have added new recognition types and time-saving
conversion features to Version 5.1. The OCR module is no longer
just for scanning text; the application now recognizes barcodes
and handprinted text. To reduce the amount of time spent editing
a document after OCR has been performed, Pixel!OCR also supports
Rich Text Format (RTF) output. With RTF output, converted text retains
font sizing and attributes as well as embedded images for subsequent
manipulation in a word processing application. Also new to this
release is the ability to convert scanned text to tab delimited
format for export to spreadsheets, databases or mail-merge applications.
Most of these new OCR features are also available in
Pixel!ENGINE
5.1, which provides a TCL-based Application Programming
Interface (API), including support for image scanning,
OCR, and image manipulation. Pixel!ENGINE enables
systems integrators and end-users to incorporate Mentalix
document imaging capabilities into their solutions
at a much reduced cost in comparison with implementing
this functionality themselves.
The Pixel!FX
imaging suite runs on popular UNIX platforms,
including Linux, Sun OS, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX,
SGI IRIX, and Digital UNIX. The Pixel!SCAN
module is compatible with more than 20 desktop and
drum scanners from leading manufacturers, such as
UMAX Technologies, Hewlett-Packard, Agfa, Fujitsu,
Howtek, Microtek, and Sharp.
The Pixel!OCR product represents just one of
the components in the Pixel!FX imaging suite.
Mentalix's product family provides a complete solution
for all image processing needs -- including applications
for scanning, editing, file format conversion and
printing, as well as a database for convenient storage
and retrieval of images. Pixel!ENGINE enables
batch or command-line interactive file conversion,
scanning and OCR functionality and can be used as
an Application Programming Interface (API). Certain
modules may be purchased separately, or users may
choose the entire, end-to-end imaging suite in one
product, Pixel!FX Deluxe.
