Mentalix Launches Version 5.0 of Pixel!FX®
Network scanning and extensive color support features added
PLANO, Texas -- Mentalix has raised the standard for UNIX-based
imaging and scanning software with its launch of Pixel!FX
version 5.0. Seeing the increasing movement toward global communications
and the Internet, Mentalix anticipated the need for transmitting
color images across worldwide computer networks and added network
scanning capabilities to the new release. Pixel!FX version
5.0 also maintains its position as a leader in the image processing
industry with ground-breaking editing features such as extensive
support of 48-bit RGB color and 64-bit CMYK images as well as consistent
color conversion between peripheral devices and the software.
Though previous versions have supported Web authoring applications,
Pixel!FX version 5.0 takes network awareness further by incorporating
network scan features directly in the product. The result is a network
scanning solution for workgroups that is also suitable for worldwide
transmission of color images through existing computer networks.
With Pixel!FX's automatic monitoring feature, users are notified
when a remote image arrives via fax or FTP. Once a remote image
is received, users can then view and edit the image with Pixel!FX
or run shell scripts to pull images into other applications, such
as a CAD/CAM imaging product.
With the added editing functionality in version 5.0 -- including
a fully interactive color adjustment feature and comprehensive editing
support for images up to 16-bit grayscale, 48-bit RGB color and
64-bit CMYK -- version 5.0 of Pixel!FX exceeds the capabilities
of niche editing products for highly demanding imaging applications.
"Color is now showing up everywhere, and a new problem that needs
to be addressed is providing consistent, quality color imaging throughout
the entire imaging process," Paul Siegert, President of Mentalix,
said. "Anybody who has used an electronic color image has probably
put effort into trying to get the image to look right on their monitor
and on their printer. Version 5.0 of Pixel!FX addresses this
need with complete WYSIWYG interactive color adjustment tools, an
increased level of automated color scan calibration, and an internal
CIE-based, device-independent, color-conversion calculation system.
"Automation has brought the business world to a point where the
productive computer user might work with a multitude of unrelated
software applications during a single business day. In this environment,
a successful product must stress interoperability along with painless
installation and an intuitive 'run and produce' level of operation.
Our development efforts are focused on this customer demand. At
the same time, the fastest growing segment of our business over
the past year has been from systems integrators. Our significant
investment in development of an applications programming interface
and integration support functionality is starting to gain widespread
acceptance."
The Pixel!SCAN module supports over 20 different scanner
models from leading manufacturers, including UMAX Technologies,
Hewlett-Packard, Agfa, Fujitsu, Howtek, Microtek, and Sharp. In
response to requests, new scanner drivers are constantly being created.
Recent additions to the list of supported scanners include four
color scanners from UMAX Technologies:
the Vista-S12, the PowerLook II, the PowerLook 2000, and the Mirage
D-16L. Mentalix recently forged a marketing agreement with UMAX
Technologies, making Pixel!FX the
UNIX solution for UMAX scanners.
In addition to state-of-the-art scanning, the Pixel!FX
product suite maintains all aspects of UNIX-powered
image processing. Pixel!EDIT offers a complete
set of image retouch, processing and special effects
tools. The Pixel!OCR engine scans documents
with greater than 99 percent accuracy. Pixel!PRINT
supports a wide range of print devices. Users can
save images in almost any file format imaginable.
The software runs on popular UNIX platforms, including
Sun OS, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, IBM AIX, SGI IRIX, and
Digital UNIX.
The Pixel!FX product includes Pixel!SCAN,
Pixel!EDIT and Pixel!VIEW. Mentalix
also offers separate adjunct modules - Pixel!OCR,
Pixel!PRINT, and Pixel!LZW. Or users
can obtain the entire suite in one end-to-end solution,
Pixel!FX Deluxe.
